Found Sound

“Found Sound” & The Joyful Benefits of Group Drumming for All Ages

There’s a rhythm inside every one of us—at every age—just waiting to be heard, expressed, and shared.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming Drum Circles that feature a special twist: “Found Sound”, a creative and playful element woven into our rhythmic experience.

🔔 Note: Not all of our drum circles will include Found Sound. Be sure to look for the ones marked “family friendly” or “for all ages” to enjoy this special feature!

🪵 What is Found Sound?

Found Sound is all about discovering rhythm in everyday life. It’s the art of making music with things that aren’t traditional instruments.

Think of it as a sound adventure—search your home, yard, or the great outdoors for objects that produce percussive or rhythmic sounds.

Before the event, go on a little scavenger hunt and find items that can be:

      • Struck (like a spoon on a tin can)

      • Shaken (like beans in a plastic bottle)

      • Rubbed (like sandpaper blocks)

      • Scraped (like a stick on a cheesegrater or comb)

Let your imagination guide you—if it makes a sound, it’s welcome in our circle!

Here are some more ideas:

      • 🥄 Pots, pans, and kitchen utensils

      • 🪣 Buckets, plastic containers, water bottles

      • 🪨 Rocks, sticks, pinecones, shells

      • 🎁 Boxes, tubes, rice-filled boxes

      • 🪵 Sandpaper, brushes, combs

This isn’t just for kids—this is a creative challenge for all ages!
Adults are encouraged to rediscover the joy of play and spontaneity. When we step out of routine and into rhythm, something beautiful and freeing happens.

Why Group Drumming?

Group drumming is more than just making noise—it’s a powerful, joyful, and healing practice that offers benefits for your entire being:

1. Builds Community & Connection

Drumming creates a space of togetherness where no words are needed. In rhythm, we experience unity, inclusion, and belonging—something all ages crave.

2. Reduces Stress & Boosts Mood

Studies show that group drumming reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and increases endorphins, helping you feel relaxed, energized, and uplifted.

3. Enhances Brain Function & Creativity

Rhythmic play stimulates both sides of the brain, improving memory, focus, coordination, and creative thinking. It’s great for developing minds—and for keeping adult minds agile and inspired.

4. Encourages Playfulness & Joy

Play is essential for everyone—not just children. It invites us to lighten up, explore freely, and build emotional resilience.

5. Promotes Mindfulness & Presence

Drumming is a form of active meditation. The beat helps us anchor into the present moment, tuning into our breath, body, and inner calm.

Let’s Make Music Together

Join us at one of our upcoming Drum Circles, where everyone is welcome—no experience necessary, just a willingness to explore, play, and connect.

🎵 Bring your Found Sound items (when noted), or simply show up—we provide drums and percussion instruments and will have extra “found sound” items to play with.

🎶 Remember – This isn’t just for kids—it’s a creative challenge for all ages!

Let’s tap into joy, creativity, and community…
One beat at a time.

The Power of Drum Circles

I was recently surprised (in the best way!) by a participant from a family-friendly drum circle I recently co-hosted with The Diversity Coalition of SLO. Paden Hughes, the author of this article, reached out to let me know she wrote about the experience—and it was approved for the April/May issue of SLO Life Magazine! What an honor!
