What our students are saying about mindfulness

The science and research is confirming the powerful and transformational benefits of mindfulness, yoga, and social-emotional learning for youth! Through my own experiences in working with youth, I have had the privilege of seeing or hearing about the positive impact it has made in their lives. I have taught mindfulness in a variety of ways with youth: in-school programs, after school programs, community programs, and one-to-one therapy for youth of all ages from preschool through high school, including special needs students in Mammoth Lakes, Sacramento, Folsom and am currently teaching programs in SLO county on the Central Coast of California. Here are just a few of the “testimonies” on how mindfulness has helped some of my students personally or what their favorite lessons were on mindfulness or heartfulness! See our adult testimonies, too! (Check back as more will be added over time!)

“I wanted to say thank you for a great class today. It was definitely my favorite so far… so many things I didn’t notice before and, with the lessons learned today, I will strive to improve my character. I especially loved the video about perspective and appreciating everyone around us, as well as things that we often take for granted, like the skies or plants, etc. Really makes you think. I’m so glad to have taken this class, because it’s making me see things so differently than before: it’s wonderful! So thanks for that…Look forward to seeing you next session!” Your mindful student, CM ~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ high school

“Mindful walking was the most impactful to me. It’s helped me significantly  in realizing the natural beauty  around me that I don’t always acknowledge as much as I should. I now feel more able to tackle stressful days, anxiety attacks, and sadness.~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ high school

“Take it [the class]! We as teenanagers are experiencing too much stress at such a young age. Learning these skills young can help you navigate through tougher times in the future. I think it should be required that students are educated in emotional aspects, not only academics. We should be knowledgeable of life skills such as mindfulness! I thought it was a beautiful program, and I will never forget the skills I’ve developed as a habit through this course. It’s helped me significantly in school and soccer. ~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ high school

“Even if you don’t think you need or would necessarily like this class, you should still try it. I’d highly recommend it because mindfulness class [helps] us to set aside time that we otherwise might not take to take care of our minds.” ~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ high school

“I think the most useful thing I learned was to take some breaths when in hard times or stress. I really liked [this class] even though I didn’t want to come at first but then I thought well this is going to be a safe place. I think this class [would be beneficial in schools] because some people can’t control their stress or anger and they need to get taught how to do that. I feel this class is very strong and can help people in the future.” ~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ middle school

“I appreciate Ms Dee for being nice and teaching. I learned many tools like breathing, eliminating negative thoughts, and the STOP method. Take it! The course helps relieve stress and makes you grow more sure about yourself! This program raises self-esteem and eliminates stress.” ~Spring 2019 Mindful Teen YOUniversity participant ~ middle school

And from the grown-ups:

“Dee visited my high school students today and made an amazing connection with them.  I have guest speakers in my CTE classes quite often, but she engaged the students in a way that none of my prior guests have done.  Dee’s presentation on Mindfulness was very well-prepared and engaging for the students, and full of visuals and interactions that connected perfectly with the students.  While brief enough to fit into a class period, it was just the right amount of knowledge to pique the students’ interests towards a practice that can benefit them (and anybody) tremendously.  We know that our students are exposed to numerous stressors at school and at home, but we do very little as a school to address this, or to give them the tools they need to deal with these stressors.  From Dee’s presentation, it is clear that the practice of Mindfulness is a much needed tool for our students and staff alike.  Kudos to Dee for her effort to help these students and others that she is reaching through “Mindful Kindful YOUniversity.”  While mindfulness can sometimes be a difficult practice for the beginner, Dee’s approach was interesting and easy enough for the students to grasp.  I highly recommend that other schools and organizations consider her mindfulness program.  As a teacher she is very much in touch with the challenges that students and others face in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven society.” ~ Kurt Lindgren, Nipomo High School

“Witnessed Dee DiGioia in action this afternoon. The content in her Dragonfly Circles class is imperative in teaching our kids how to manage THEIR emotions. Through recognition, communication and BREATH they are learning to maintain their energy and create joy. I highly recommend looking into the classes she’s offering it’s never too late to start. Parents of teens get your kids in there and working with her!” ~ Karlie Salitore Relyea, parent
