Mindful Kindful YOUniversity offers “Peace Pals” ~ a mindfulness-based social-emotional learning enrichment program offered in various community locations across San Luis Obispo County for children, ages 7-11, to learn and practice HOW to grow their inner “superpowers” for self-empowerment, self-awareness, and self-regulation of body and mind for health, happiness, and well-being.

Who is this class for?

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity (MK YOU) was founded by Dee DiGioia to address the challenges youth face in school and in life, which interfere with learning, relationships, and mental health and well-being (including managing difficult emotions). Peace Pals is one of our core programs to learn about, and practice, the skills that will support your child now, and for the rest of their lives! Give your child the edge for responding more skillfully to life in the 21st Century!

Peace Pals is ideal for children who may be:

1-Highly sensitive, “shy”, anxious, easily overwhelmed, and/or tentative or reluctant to speak up in a group setting (or are often drowned out by others); and also may have social anxiety and have difficulty entering an unfamiliar environment. I’m excited to help your child find the tools to bloom in peace and confidence and feel more freedom in daily living! This class is designed to intentionally create a space where your child feels safe to discover their inner superpowers and the courage to try them out!

This class has the potential to provide new life-skills for children with the above traits, but these are often the children who will resist and come up with reasons for not going! Parents often submit thinking they are doing well to not “push” their child into something uncomfortable, however, avoidance only increases anxiety!! The key to overcoming avoidance behaviors is to continue to slowly face what is being avoided, with assistance from supportive adult (me!), until it no longer has such a negative hold on your child. We’ll gently create some new positive memories in a small, safe, and positive group environment! Please make this life-changing decision for your child! Feel free to contact me if you have questions or need help with this. If needed, we can do some Personal Coaching prior to, or in conjunction with, taking this class.

2-This class is also for “easy going” children who love to learn, socialize, create, and/or share ideas. These children are often our strong role models and “leaders” who will contribute to a safe, supportive, and accepting “community” and become ambassadors of peace in our classes and in other settings because of the new skills they will learn.

PLEASE NOTE: Children who join our classes are expected to independently follow directions and participate well in a group learning environment. This class is NOT appropriate for children who are “always on the move”, and struggle with following directions, self-regulation, difficulty sitting, and impulse control in a group learning environment, however, this child may be a great candidate for Personal Coaching before joining a class like Peace Pals to learn these very important skills.

Weekly Learning Themes for

Mental Health & Well-being

We playfully explore our inner world of thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and behaviors through weekly themes to develop the life skills for emotional intelligence, or “Sm’Heart skills.”  Our students become empowered and equipped with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to positively impact all areas of their lives and help them move through their daily challenges! They begin to trust their very own inner resources or “superpowers” and begin tapping into these skills, as needed, at school and at home, including…

Our mindfulness-based learning themes are woven into our classes each week in any combination of the following:

  • Social skills + relationship building activities 
  • Movement and physical activities 
  • Stillness, calming, & relaxation practices
  • Social – emotional learning and activities (including the Zones of Regulation)
  • Storytelling
  • Creativity + expressive arts
  • Journaling (integrate and process our lessons at a deeper level through writing or drawing)
In an increasingly disconnected online world, our in-class group experience helps kids practice social skills with other kids they may be meeting for the first time — real face-to-face “people practice”! 
Home practices will be suggested to help your child integrate and enhance learning and skill attainment outside our class “walls”.

The science and research is confirming

the powerful and transformational benefits of mindfulness, yoga, and social-emotional learning for youth!

These essential life skills we practice are grounded in science and positive psychology to develop positive, healthy habits. These experiences will transform, not only inner peace and happiness, but also social dynamics at school, at home, and in the community! These are skills for life!

Although there is flexibility for attending this class with “drop-in rates”, those who will gain the most benefit are those who attend regularly.  Research has demonstrated that those who practice these skills regularly will benefit! The core competencies of social-emotional intelligence are the major predictors of overall well-being, success, and happiness in life!

“Kids who practice yoga, meditation and mindfulness build skills of attention, self awareness, self management leading to more responsible decision making and prosocial behavior,” says “Yoga 4 Classrooms” founder Lisa Flynn. “It’s no surprise that studies show that these kids are, in general, happier, more resilient children. “{My daughter) has been attending Dee’s Dragonfly class after school for about 6 months and she looks forward to it weekly. I can see her putting the skills she’s learning to work when managing daily life. Just a few weeks ago {my daughter) was upset with me about something. My husband was getting ready to do our nightly reading with her and I was putting our younger daughter to bed. She told him she didn’t like me for whatever reason. My husband proceeded to say to {my daughter), “what would Dee tell you to do in a situation like this?” She then closed her eyes and started the rhythmic breathing they’ve learned in class and continue to practice weekly. Next thing you know she was calm and she was sleeping peacefully before he knew it. I share this because parenting is hard gig and I believe if we can lead our children with a mindful parenting style it can help us and our children with the tools to manage the happenings of daily life. These life skills are so important and if we learn them early in they will do better off in the long run. Coming down the pipeline are middle school, adolescence, high school, academics, sports and navigating friends are just a few. There’s so much research out there that supports this and with the rise in technology and violence we are facing we can’t deny ourselves and our kids to learn to be centered and go inward. I (as many of you probably did) had a tumultuous childhood especially when my parents divorced when I was in middle school coupled with parents who suffer with addiction. I had many years where I was “floating” making some bad choices. It wasn’t until I was finally into college I was really confused and kind of lost that I started incorporating mindfulness in my life. Please consider Dee’s classes! The dragonfly begins its life submerged under water as a nymph and endures many obstacles and challenges before emerging as the revered and beautiful dragonfly. As we shed any negative or unskillful patterns of limiting thoughts, behaviors, and habits, then we are growing our “wings” and are empowered to experience a whole new way of living in happiness, health, wisdom, and well-being.
