What is Earthing? (~ 1 min)
WHAT IS EARTHING? Nearly 20 years of extensive research shows that connecting to the earth’s natural energy, by walking barefoot or connecting our bare skin to the surface of the planet on grass, sand, stone, or dirt, can diminish the chronic pain, fatigue, and other ailments that plague so many. This connection is referred to as Earthing, also known as grounding. WATCH “The Earthing Movie: The Remarkable Science of Grounding” (above). It’s a feature-length documentary, Sundance Award-Winning film and winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Dances With Films Festival. It’s based on the viral short film entitled ‘Down To Earth,’ (also above) that reveals the scientific phenomenon of how we can heal our bodies by doing the simplest thing that a person can do…standing barefoot on the earth. The film shares the Tickell family’s journey with the healing power of grounding, aka earthing, and the people they met and learned from along the way; featuring grounding pioneer Clint Ober, author Deepak Chopra M.D., actress/activist Amy Smart, author/activist Mariel Hemingway, cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra, renowned healer Dr Joseph Mercola, engineer and physicist Gaetan Chevalier, PhD. and many others. Of course we can’t always stand barefoot on the earth so Earthing provides products to help us get grounded when we are inside.
(This one is my own!) “After watching “The Earthing Movie” (above) on You tube back in November 2019, I was intrigued with the findings and decided to try out a grounding pad. I was still having some sciatica leg and knee pain. More than that, I have had difficulty sleeping for years, for as long as I can remember, tossing and turning all night long, waking up, difficulty getting back to sleep sometimes. Mindfulness helps me get back to sleep but with my grounding pad, I noticed a significant difference — I don’t toss and turn at all and I sleep so much more deeply and even if I awake in the night, where before I had difficulty getting back to sleep, now I get right back to sleep – even during this pandemic – I am amazed how well I am sleeping!!! It has been several months since I began using the grounding pad in my bed and the difference is, dare I say, “night and day” compared to how I used to sleep. There have been measured positive effects of using grounding to enhance the depth and length of sleep, reducing pain, and reducing stress. One of the first studies on this came out in 2004 and found that grounding improved sleep and reduced cortisol levels, a stress hormone. Approximately 30 percent of the American population experiences sleep disruptions.Grounding has been shown to help with every aspect of the sleeping process: improved morning fatigue, less nighttime pain, higher daytime energy, decreased cortisol levels, and falling asleep faster.

CONCLUSION: De Flora et al. wrote the following: “Since the late 20th century, chronic degenerative diseases have overcome infectious disease as the major causes of death in the 21st century, so an increase in human longevity will depend on finding an intervention that inhibits the development of these diseases and slows their progress” . Could such an intervention be located right beneath our feet? Earthing research, observations, and related theories raise an intriguing possibility about the Earth’s surface electrons as an untapped health resource—the Earth as a “global treatment table.” Emerging evidence shows that contact with the Earth—whether being outside barefoot or indoors connected to grounded conductive systems—may be a simple, natural, and yet profoundly effective environmental strategy against chronic stress, ANS dysfunction, inflammation, pain, poor sleep, disturbed HRV, hypercoagulable blood, and many common health disorders, including cardiovascular disease. The research done to date supports the concept that grounding or earthing the human body may be an essential element in the health equation along with sunshine, clean air and water, nutritious food, and physical activity.
CONCLUSION: Accumulating experiences and research on earthing, or grounding, point to the emergence of a simple, natural, and accessible health strategy against chronic inﬂammation, warranting the serious attention of clinicians and researchers. The living matrix (or ground regulation or tissue tensegrity-matrix system), the very fabric of the body, appears to serve as one of our primary antioxidant defense systems. As this report explains, it is a system requiring occasional recharging by conductive contact with the Earth’s surface – the “battery” for all planetary life – to be optimally effective.
