“Peace Pals” is a mindfulness-based social-emotional learning enrichment program offered in various community locations across San Luis Obispo County for children, ages 7-11, to learn and practice HOW to grow their inner “superpowers” for self-empowerment, self-awareness, and self-regulation of body and mind for health, happiness, and well-being.

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity (MK YOU) was founded by Dee DiGioia to address the challenges youth face in school and in life, which interfere with learning, relationships, and mental well-being, including managing difficult emotions (such as stress, anxiety, overwhelm, depression, anger), and social-relational challenges (and bullying).

“Peace Pals” is ideal for children who may be described as “shy,” “anxious,” easily overwhelmed, and/or may be tentative or reluctant to speak or share in a group setting, but over time becomes comfortable. Perhaps this child also has challenges in emotional-regulation with friends and family (big emotions), but generally holds it together in classroom or group settings. Our class is also ideal for the child who is “easy going” and loves to learn and share ideas. This child is likely a strong role model and “leader” who will contribute to a safe, supportive, and accepting “community” in our classes. Children who join our classes are expected to follow directions and participate well in a group learning environment, and commit to being heart-centered and practice non-violence in words and actions.

We’re working on our skills to be mindful, kindful, and peaceful as we playfully explore our inner world of thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and behaviors integrating evidence-based strategies and practices of mindfulness, movement, yoga, and social emotional learning to develop the life skills for emotional intelligence, or “Sm’Heart skills” — the essential education for responding more skillfully to life in the 21st Century
We learn and practice the essential life skills grounded in science and positive psychology to develop positive, healthy habits. These positive experiences will transform, not only inner peace and happiness, but also social dynamics at school, at home, and in the community! These are skills for life!

Weekly themes promote social, emotional, and physical fitness and well-being to strengthen our “muscles” for strong hearts, strong minds, strong bodies. These themes are introduced and woven each week in any combination of the following: 

Social skills + relationship building activities * Calming & relaxation practices * Mindful awareness training * Movement * Yoga Storytelling Creativity + expressive arts (he’arts) * and more!

Journaling may be incorporated in our class to integrate and process our lessons at a deeper level through writing or drawing.
Home practices will be suggested to help your child integrate and enhance learning and skill attainment outside our class “walls”.

We’re working on our skills to be mindful, kindful, and peaceful!

Our class intentions are to “Be Heart-Centered” and to practice non-violence: “listen from the heart, speak from the heart, act from the heart — leave only heartprints”. Students become empowered and equipped with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to positively impact all areas of their lives and move through the daily challenges that show up. They begin to trust their very own inner resources or “superpowers” and begin tapping into these skills, as needed, at school and at home:

“{My daughter) has been attending Dee’s Dragonfly class after school for about 6 months and she looks forward to it weekly. I can see her putting the skills she’s learning to work when managing daily life. Just a few weeks ago {my daughter) was upset with me about something. My husband was getting ready to do our nightly reading with her and I was putting our younger daughter to bed. She told him she didn’t like me for whatever reason. My husband proceeded to say to {my daughter), “what would Dee tell you to do in a situation like this?” She then closed her eyes and started the rhythmic breathing they’ve learned in class and continue to practice weekly. Next thing you know she was calm and she was sleeping peacefully before he knew it. I share this because parenting is hard gig and I believe if we can lead our children with a mindful parenting style it can help us and our children with the tools to manage the happenings of daily life. These life skills are so important and if we learn them early in they will do better off in the long run. Coming down the pipeline are middle school, adolescence, high school, academics, sports and navigating friends are just a few. There’s so much research out there that supports this and with the rise in technology and violence we are facing we can’t deny ourselves and our kids to learn to be centered and go inward. I (as many of you probably did) had a tumultuous childhood especially when my parents divorced when I was in middle school coupled with parents who suffer with addiction. I had many years where I was “floating” making some bad choices. It wasn’t until I was finally into college I was really confused and kind of lost that I started incorporating mindfulness in my life. Please consider Dee’s classes! The science and research is confirming

the powerful and transformational benefits of mindfulness, yoga, and social-emotional learning for youth!

Although there is flexibility for attending this class, those who will gain the most benefit are those who attend regularly because the magic is in the “seeds” which are planted through our weekly practices.  Research has demonstrated over and over that those who practice these skills will benefit!

The core competencies of social-emotional intelligence are the major predictors of overall well-being, success, and happiness in life!

The symbolism of the dragonfly aligns with the intentions of Mindful Kindful YOUniversity. The dragonfly is often associated with transformation, wisdom, adaptability, resilience, and power. The dragonfly begins its life submerged under water as a nymph and endures many obstacles and challenges before emerging as the revered and beautiful dragonfly. As we shed any negative or unskillful patterns of limiting thoughts, behaviors, and habits, then we are growing our “wings” and are empowered to experience a whole new way of living in happiness, health, wisdom, and well-being.
