Dragonfly Circles” is a YOUth Enrichment Program (ages 7-11) offered in various community locations of San Luis Obispo County integrating evidence-based strategies and practices of mindfulness, movement & yoga, and social emotional learning to develop the life skills for emotional intelligence, or “Sm’Heart skills” — the essential education for responding more skillfully to life in the 21st Century!

SHORT DESCRIPTION: One-of-a-kind learning enrichment & emotional/physical fitness program to strengthen the “muscles” of heart-mind-body for overall well-being. Our program addresses the challenges of youth which interfere with learning, social relationships, and mental well-being, including stress, anxiety, depression, bullying, and more. Students become empowered and equipped with the knowledge, tools, and confidence on HOW to cultivate our inner resources, or “superpowers” to transform social dynamics at school and home, and respond to life moment to moment in a healthy, balanced, and positive way.  Our formula for success: Mindful + Kindful + Peaceful = Superpowers for Well-being. Social skills activities * Calming & relaxation practices * Mindful awareness training * Music & movement * Yoga * Storytelling * Creative/expressive arts (he’arts). To change the world, we begin within. WHOLE MIND-HEART-BODY APPROACH TO LEARNING & FITNESS ~

Join our one-of-a-kind learning enrichment program! Our weekly themes promote social, emotional, and physical fitness and well-being grounded in science and positive psychology to integrate and strengthen our “muscles” for strong MINDSstrong HEARTSstrong BODIES. These themes are introduced and woven each week in any combination of the following: 

Social skills activities * Calming & relaxation practices * Mindful awareness training* Music & movement * Yoga Storytelling Creative/expressive arts (he’arts) 

I will be looking at how to weave in a Bullying Intervention component, including Peace Projects or we may start a whole new class for this!

Each week we build on the emotional intelligence, or “sm’heart” skills introduced to strengthen the “muscles” of mind/body/heart. Students become empowered and equipped with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to positively impact all areas of their lives and move through the daily challenges that show up. They begin to trust their very own inner resources or “superpowers” and begin tapping into them as needed at school and home. >>> See “what our students are saying!” <<<

“{My daughter) has been attending Dee’s Dragonfly class after school for about 6 months and she looks forward to it weekly. I can see her putting the skills she’s learning to work when managing daily life. Just a few weeks ago {my daughter) was upset with me about something. My husband was getting ready to do our nightly reading with her and I was putting our younger daughter to bed. She told him she didn’t like me for whatever reason. My husband proceeded to say to {my daughter), “what would Dee tell you to do in a situation like this?” She then closed her eyes and started the rhythmic breathing they’ve learned in class and continue to practice weekly. Next thing you know she was calm and she was sleeping peacefully before he knew it. I share this because parenting is hard gig and I believe if we can lead our children with a mindful parenting style it can help us and our children with the tools to manage the happenings of daily life. These life skills are so important and if we learn them early in they will do better off in the long run. Coming down the pipeline are middle school, adolescence, high school, academics, sports and navigating friends are just a few. There’s so much research out there that supports this and with the rise in technology and violence we are facing we can’t deny ourselves and our kids to learn to be centered and go inward. I (as many of you probably did) had a tumultuous childhood especially when my parents divorced when I was in middle school coupled with parents who suffer with addiction. I had many years where I was “floating” making some bad choices. It wasn’t until I was finally into college I was really confused and kind of lost that I started incorporating mindfulness in my life. Please consider Dee’s classes! Although there is flexibility for attending this class, those who will gain the most benefit are those who attend regularly because the magic is in the “seeds” which are planted through our weekly practices.  Research has demonstrated over and over that those who practice these skills will benefit! These are the core competencies of social-emotional intelligence, and the major predictors of overall well-being, success, and happiness in life. 

We create a safe, supportive, and accepting “community” within our classroom to help each student feel confident to try new things, while discovering their gifts, reaching new heights in physical, mental and emotional well-being!

in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, and Atascadero.

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity was founded to address the challenges youth face in school and in life, which interfere with learning, relationships, and mental well-being, such as:

  • stress, overwhelm;
  • self-awareness;
  • distraction, impulse control, difficulty focusing;
  • bullying and social issues;
  • difficult emotions — anger, anxiety, depression, etc.

Of course, it’s not just youth with these social-emotional or mental health challenges who can benefit from “Dragonfly Circles”. Our practices and principles can benefit all students because MK YOU equips and teaches students HOW to cultivate the inner resources, or “superpowers” for reducing stress and experiencing more balance, resilience, overall well-being. These positive experiences will transform, not only inner peace and happiness, but also social dynamics at school, at home, and in the community! The symbolism of the dragonfly aligns with the intentions of Mindful Kindful YOUniversity. The dragonfly is often associated with transformation, wisdom, adaptability, resilience, and power. The dragonfly begins its life submerged under water as a nymph and endures many obstacles and challenges before emerging as the revered and beautiful dragonfly. As we shed any negative or unskillful patterns of limiting thoughts, behaviors, and habits, then we are growing our “wings” and are empowered to experience a whole new way of living in happiness, health, wisdom, and well-being. Dee DiGioia (di JOY uh)Certified Mindfulness & Well-Being Life Skills Coach

Served youth for 30+ years, including those with social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and communication challenges in my roles as a Speech-Language Therapist, Autism Movement Therapist, Preschool Director, Bullying Intervention Specialist, Author, and more. Founded “Caring and Courageous Kids” in 2009 (bullying intervention), and founded “Mindful Kindful YOUniversity” in 2017. Pioneered a mindfulness program for K-5 classrooms at an inner city charter school in Sacramento, CA, and am developing youth and adult programs where I now live on the Central Coast of CA. Made a decision to follow my own advice for well-being by leaving the stresses and challenges of working in special education in the public school setting. Following my heart and calling to share mindfulness and well-being programs to address the challenges youth (and adults) face in school and in life, which interfere with learning, relationships, and mental well-being. I believe mindfulness is the missing piece (and peace) in education and am bringing my vision to fruition! I am grateful to have the experiences and resources to share the wisdom, science, and evidence-based practices of mindfulness and more, which have proven over and over to lead to greater resilience, more joy, and peace in life.
